The Petabyte Age

“Sensors everywhere. Infinite storage. Clouds of processors. Our ability to capture, warehouse, and understand massive amounts of data is changing science, medicine, business, and technology. As our collection of facts and figures grows, so will the opportunity to find answers to fundamental questions.” -wired.com

It’s always interesting to me to look back at processor speeds and data storage. The processor in my BlackBerry is faster then what was in my first computer 13 years ago. I have about 1.5 terabytes of storage at the moment, and another terabyte or more backed up on discs. I wonder what amount of data will be typical to have in 10 years from now. Solid state terabyte drives are on the way already.

Why can’t people, Americans especially work together in a similar way ants do? Yes ants… the tiny little insects that have been around for a more then a hundred million years. With all of the issues going on in today’s screwed up society, it would be so beneficial if we worked together to solve problems. Instead, most of us just end up being angry, misinterpreting things, or just working around ongoing problems hoping they will magically fix themselves one day and all will be better. To bad things don’t work like that.

Every day I see a new article on Digg or some other news website about the gas prices. So far it has just been a huge domino effect and I have a feeling the same thing will continue for years. Transportation costs for food has gone up because of the gas, so it costs more to eat. People aren’t driving anymore because they can’t afford to… no trips or vacations means less business for hotels, restaurants, boutiques, and any other store that vacationers might spend their money at, and will possibly cause the places to shut down because they cannot afford to stay open any longer. I keep thinking about that South Park episode when they build a Wal-Mart in the town and everyone starts shopping there which forces the local shops to go out of business.

The only companies that will be able to stay in business are multi-million (billion?) dollar places like Wal-Mart. Wouldn’t it be scary if the only stores that were around were department stores and the warehouse type of shopping centers filled with products made in China? Holy crap.

Eagle at Ediz Hook

While heading back from the coast guard base, we noticed a eagle sitting on a log, so I got a couple pictures of it. I swear the thing was as big as me. I think it was a baby as well because the feathers on its head are still a bit brown.

Mothers Day

How ironic.
